Control the controllable ... or, how golf is like life

Did you know in order to have a perfect golf swing 36 things must go mechanically right throughout the swing. That is a lot of things to think about and control during a swing that takes an average of 2 to 3 seconds. Did you know the average golfer who shoots under 50 for nine holes actually can only actively control about 5 to 6 of them. The average professional golf actually controls only 7 to 9 of them. So that means the remaining mechanical pieces (27 to 31) are out of our control.

That sounds an awful lot like life when you think about it. We really only have control over a few things in our lives. Yet we are always trying to control so many things in our lives that we have no real control over. This can lead to frustration and a feeling of helplessness. We feel out of control and we feel like nothing is ever really getting accomplished the way we want it to be. I tell my kids all the time, don't worry about what you can not control. Only worry about what you can control and what you can control is you.

None of us can control the behavior of the world around us. The only behavior we can control is our behavior. Each day brings on new challenges and obstacles that we have no control over, but if we practice taking control over those few things that we know we can control. Those challenges and obstacles become less formidable and can turn into opportunities that we were not able to see.

So be your own positive influence and take care of the things you know you can take care of today and let the rest sort itself out. Because those challenges and obstacles, they are going to be here tomorrow again. .
