On Simplicity

"Simplicity is difficult to achieve". It is said until you can take 1000 written words and distill them into one concise paragraph you have not mastered the art of simplicity.

All of us have heard ourselves say, "It's simple and easy to do" and we say this without a second thought. But what if we gave it a second thought? We would see that the end result was  simple, but we would also have to take notice of all the hard work that went into making it simple. When we think of an idea that we believe is a good idea with lots of value, do we say to ourselves "This is a great idea and it is so great I am going to see how hard I can make it for everyone to try to do"? Of course we don't. We usually think about how we can make our ideas simple so that as many people as possible can use them.

This is when all the hard work goes into this beautiful idea that we think and hope will benefit all of those around us. It is then we start to realize that simplicity is difficult to achieve. We also realize the true value of this idea. We realize and embrace the need to put the hard work into our idea. We usually repeat one of the truest statements ever said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing great". It is from this mindset that we embrace the process and the work that will be required to achieve simplicity. So next time you want to say it's simple and easy to do, take a second to think about what actually went into making this awesome simple idea a reality.
